Green Building Alliance

Allegheny County, Pennsylvania

The first LEED-Commercial Interiors Platinum project in Pennsylvania, the Green Building Alliance offices are a model and learning tool for sustainable, energy-efficient design that is both healthy and beautiful.

Project Description

Located at The Highline, GBA’s offices were renovated to achieve the highest level of LEED Certification (LEED Platinum), and the renovation was the first LEED-Commercial Interiors Platinum certified project in Pennsylvania. The space acts as a working and learning model for sustainable design, construction and operations, and for creating workspaces that prioritize healthy, sustainable, and local materials. The east wall of the office highlights the original Terminal Building windows and doors that were left intact during the initial renovations of the space for historic purposes. The office is designed to maximize natural light through incorporation of low cubicle walls, glass doors, and floor-to-ceiling windows in the conference room. A combination of abundant natural daylight and efficient interior lighting increases productivity and comfort for employees and reduces energy demand for lighting. Interior magnetic storm windows were added to the existing east wall windows to optimize thermal insulation and protect against the elements. The office also makes use of sustainable and repurposed materials, including Marmoleum tile floors, exposed original brick, certified local hardwoods, and salvaged flooring, furniture, and furnishings.
